Lucknow News Roundup: Record Monsoon Rainfall, Expressway Toll Suspension and Chief Minister Directives
Lucknow recorded its heaviest single-day rainfall of the current monsoon season with 78.4 mm of precipitation measured till 8.30 am on Thursday. The widespread showers, continuing for the fourth consecutive day across Uttar Pradesh, provided respite from humid conditions and improved the state monsoon rainfall deficit. The maximum temperature in the city stood at 30.2 degrees Celsius, 3.4 degrees below normal. While the rain offered relief, it also caused waterlogging in several low-lying areas. The India Meteorological Department has forecast light to moderate rain at many places in the state till August 10.

On the infrastructure front, the National Highways Authority of India has suspended toll collection on the newly opened Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway until rectification of damaged stretches is completed. Following reports of pavement slippage near kilometre 64 and other defects emerging within weeks of inauguration, NHAI has proposed declaring the concessionaire PNC Infratech a non-performer. This would render the firm ineligible for future NHAI projects. Show-cause notices have been issued proposing financial penalties and debarment of responsible personnel. An expert committee led by IIT Kharagpur has been formed to examine the causes. The concessionaire has been directed to undertake all repairs at its own cost, with toll revenue losses also to be recovered from it.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, chairing a review meeting, described the ongoing Kanwar Yatra as a powerful example of social harmony and national unity. He ordered a zero-tolerance approach against rumour-mongers and anti-social elements attempting to disrupt public order or create divisions. The Chief Minister directed officials to intensify efforts under Mission Shakti for women safety and maintain vigilance in districts observing simultaneous events.
In a separate directive, the Chief Minister called for the formulation of an integrated youth policy reflecting the changing aspirations of the 16-35 age group. Priority is to be given to skill development in artificial intelligence, robotics, cyber security and other emerging sectors, along with promotion of entrepreneurship. The possibility of constituting a state youth commission is also to be explored. Measures for the welfare of nomadic communities under a new development board were also highlighted.
