Lucknow Thunderstorm Triggers Waterlogging and Power Cuts Across City Localities
A sharp Wednesday thunderstorm swept across Lucknow, bringing brief relief from sticky heat but leaving behind waterlogged roads, fallen trees and power cuts that stretched from a few minutes to several hours in parts of the city.
Rain began around 1 pm with strong winds and thunder. Visibility dipped on some stretches just as school pick-ups were under way. Chinhat recorded the highest fall at 27 mm, followed by Aliganj (15 mm), Gomti Nagar (13.5 mm), Jankipuram (11.5 mm) and Raj Bhawan (7.5 mm), according to local weather readings reported with the event.

Waterlogging was reported in Nirala Nagar, Gomti Nagar, Faizullaganj, parts of Aliganj and other low-lying pockets. Residents blamed clogged drains and garbage for turning a 20-minute shower into street-deep water. In Gomti Nagar, a large tree fell on a moving car; no injuries were reported and a Lucknow Municipal Corporation team cleared the road. Hoardings and branches also came down elsewhere.
Power disruptions hit multiple localities after trees and hoardings snagged lines or substations tripped. Local reporting described outages lasting from about 20 minutes to as long as six hours in pockets spanning Gomti Nagar’s Vishal Khand and Vikas Khand, Indiranagar, Mahanagar, Nishatganj, Jankipuram, Madiyaon, Triveni Nagar, Faizullaganj, Chinhat and other belts — a reminder that a short storm still tests Lucknow’s drainage and overhead network together.

The day’s maximum temperature was 35.2°C and the minimum 25.7°C, with relative humidity touching 92%. Regional Meteorological Centre scientist Mohammad Danish linked the cell to Arabian Sea moisture, a western disturbance and a cyclonic circulation over west Uttar Pradesh, with partly cloudy skies and a further chance of thundery weather flagged for the following day.
