Heavy Monsoon Rains Cause Widespread Waterlogging in Lucknow; School Van Attacked During Kanwar Yatra

Lucknow, August 4, 2026: The capital city of Uttar Pradesh continues to grapple with the effects of an active monsoon system as heavy rains lashed various parts of Lucknow over the past 24 hours, leading to significant waterlogging in several localities.

According to the India Meteorological Department, an orange alert remains in effect for heavy rainfall in the region. Areas including Ashiana, the vicinity of Purnia Flyover, LKS Colony, Shaheed Path stretches in Kamta and Vibhuti Khand, and other low-lying zones reported accumulation of rainwater, disrupting traffic and daily commute. Temperatures hovered between 27 and 31 degrees Celsius amid high humidity levels and overcast skies.

Weather officials have indicated that the spell of moderate to heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and possible lightning in some districts, is likely to persist for the next few days. Residents have been advised to exercise caution, avoid waterlogged roads, and stay updated with official advisories.

In a separate incident that drew public attention, a school van carrying children was allegedly attacked by a group of motorcycle-borne individuals identified as kanwariyas at Charak Crossing under the Chowk police station limits on Monday morning. The episode followed a minor collision when the van braked due to rain, after which the riders reportedly damaged the rear windshield and side mirror of the vehicle before fleeing the scene.

No children were injured in the incident, though they were left frightened. Police have registered a case based on the complaint and are examining CCTV footage along with registration details of the motorcycles involved to identify and take action against those responsible. Authorities have reiterated the need for orderly conduct during the ongoing Kanwar Yatra.

These developments come amid broader preparations for the monsoon session of the Uttar Pradesh legislature and ongoing discussions around the supplementary budget, which is expected to focus on infrastructure, education, and rural development initiatives.
