Fresh Defects Surface on Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway Raising Safety Concerns

Barely a month after its inauguration, the Rs 4,200-crore Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway has come under renewed scrutiny following the discovery of fresh defects, including a crack in a crash barrier on a bridge and road subsidence on a nearly 10-metre stretch.

According to reports, between July 13 and August 11, road depressions, subsidence or failure of patchwork have been reported at around 45 locations along the 45-km greenfield section of the expressway. National Highways Authority of India officials indicated that more than 40 locations have already been repaired, with work continuing at five sites as of Tuesday.

On Tuesday, a nearly 10-metre stretch of the carriageway sank near Hasnapur at km 29.84 on the Kanpur-Lucknow direction. Patchwork at several earlier failure points has also begun peeling off, prompting restrictions on heavy vehicle movement in the affected area. Additional repairs are underway between km 32.8 and km 33.1, where the bituminous surface has started coming off, and nearly 150 metres of road is being reconstructed at km 33.5.

A crack has also appeared in the crash barrier of the bridge over Chiraiya Nala at km 30.1 near Sohrawan on the Kanpur-bound carriageway. An IIT Kharagpur team has completed its field investigation, collecting samples and recordings, and is expected to submit its report within seven days.

These developments echo broader concerns about infrastructure quality across Uttar Pradesh.
