Infrastructure challenges, political transitions, and industrial growth dominated the headlines in Lucknow on Saturday.
The Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway continued to face issues as fresh potholes emerged on the recently inaugurated corridor. PNC Infratech, the executing agency for Package-2, attributed the recurring damage to heavy and incessant rainfall that affected isolated and localised stretches. Reconstruction work has begun on another 200-metre section, even as earlier repairs on a 350-metre stretch were completed. Toll collection remains suspended until the expressway is fully operational, according to NHAI officials. The company clarified that the affected portion represents less than 0.5 percent of the total length and that it has not been declared a non-performer.
In political developments, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati paid emotional tributes to the party’s sole legislator in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, Uma Shankar Singh, who passed away on August 5 after battling brain cancer. Thousands bid farewell at his last rites in Ballia. Mayawati described him as a loyal leader who never betrayed the party and indicated that his son, Yukesh Singh, could be promoted in politics if the family so desires, potentially fielding him from the Rasra seat in the upcoming assembly elections.
A significant industrial announcement came with plans to develop the state’s largest industrial area in Bachhrawan, Rae Bareli. Spanning 104 square kilometres under the Uttar Pradesh State Capital Region, the project is estimated to involve an investment of Rs 26,000 crore. It is expected to create more than 2.5 lakh direct jobs and host units in automobile, defence, railway, food processing, and logistics sectors.
Separately, the body of a former Merchant Navy officer was recovered from a car on the Sitapur Highway near Sarenya Bazar. The deceased, identified as Almas from Khurram Nagar who had switched to the medicine business, had been missing. Police are probing the possibility of foul play as the body was found in suspicious circumstances after remaining in the vehicle for several days.
Weather across Lucknow stayed mostly cloudy with maximum temperatures around 33 to 34 degrees Celsius and minimum near 28 degrees. Humidity remained high, and the India Meteorological Department indicated that monsoon intensity may ease from Sunday, with only light rain possible in the capital and several districts.
