In a major anti-corruption operation, the Uttar Pradesh Vigilance Establishment on Saturday arrested three persons, including a junior engineer and a supervisor of the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA), while they were allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 7.5 lakh.
The arrested accused have been identified as Dinesh Kumar Verma, junior engineer (LDA), Chandra Prakash, supervisor, and Shravan Kumar, a private individual. According to a Vigilance department statement, the accused misused complaints filed on the Integrated Grievance Redressal System (IGRS) portal to extort money from property owners by threatening them with enforcement action against unauthorised construction.
Investigators said Verma had visited the complainant’s construction site and ordered a halt to the work, citing an IGRS complaint. The complainant was then directed to Shravan Kumar, who allegedly demanded Rs 15 lakh to ensure no further action. The amount was later agreed to be paid in two instalments of Rs 7.5 lakh each. A trap was laid and the three were caught accepting the first instalment. Rs 7.5 lakh was recovered on the spot.
The case has been registered under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The LDA has initiated departmental proceedings, including suspension of the involved employees. The arrests come at a time when the authority has intensified its drive against illegal constructions across the city in the aftermath of the Aliganj fire tragedy.
In a separate development of public importance, over seven lakh domestic LPG consumers in Lucknow face an August 15 deadline to complete mandatory e-KYC verification. Officials from oil marketing companies have cautioned that those who fail to complete the process may be required to pay commercial rates for domestic cylinders, which are significantly higher. Lucknow has approximately 15 lakh domestic LPG connections, of which nearly half remain pending verification. Consumers can complete e-KYC at their gas agencies or through the respective mobile applications of Indane, Bharatgas and HP Gas.
Meanwhile, the monsoon session of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly is set to commence on Monday. The supplementary budget is expected to be presented during the session. Weather forecasts indicate the likelihood of rain and thunderstorms in several parts of the state, including the capital, in the coming days.
