A Green Day in East Lucknow: Lohia Park, the Riverfront and Janeshwar Mishra

East Lucknow is where the city put its new lawns. If you have already done the Imambaras, or if you have children who will not last a ticketed hall, give a day to three open spaces that sit on the same side of the Gomti: Lohia Park, the riverfront, and Janeshwar Mishra Park. None of them is a monument. All of them are how this half of Lucknow actually spends a holiday.

Do not try to add the zoo. Lucknow Zoo is west, at Banarasi Bagh. That is a different auto and a different ticket. This day stays east.

Morning: Lohia Park

Start at Lohia Park in Vipin Khand, Gomti Nagar. LDA, about 76 acres, a lake, jogging tracks, four courtyards. It is the older Gomti Nagar park, the one office-walkers mean when they have not gone out as far as JM Park. Gate tickets were last raised in a 2024 LDA-linked report to Rs 15, with free entry listed for visitors over 60 and children under 12. Pay the board you see. Hours are a courtyard question; commercial pages print roughly 5 or 6 am to 9 or 10 pm.

Walk the lake. Do not come here looking for a planetarium. Do not come here expecting JM Park’s 376 acres. An hour is enough. Eat after, not on the tiled edge if a sign says no.

Late morning to afternoon: the riverfront

From Vipin Khand an auto to the Gomti riverfront is the next hop. This is the city’s advertised water edge: promenade, lawns, a view of the bridges. It fills at dusk. Late morning is quieter and hotter. Carry water. The river is not a swimming pool. Stay on the built path.

If you want food with a view of the same water, Food Valley is the stall strip on this belt. It is not Chowk. It is chaat, grills and a crowd when the evening lands. Save it for after JM Park if you are stretching the day, or use it as lunch if the children are already done with lawns.

Late afternoon: Janeshwar Mishra Park

Janeshwar Mishra Park is the large Extension outing, much bigger than Lohia, with the kind of sky that makes a good photograph and a long walk. Go in the late afternoon. Confirm the day’s ticket at the gate you use. It is LDA, not Forest. If you wanted plantation and gharials instead, that is Kukrail, a separate Forest Department ground further east. Do not mix the two in one tired afternoon unless you have a car and a stubborn plan.

A sane order

• Lohia Park 7:30 to 9 am, walkers’ hour.
• Riverfront late morning, or skip it and go straight to JM Park after a sit-down lunch in Gomti Nagar.
• JM Park 4 pm onward in summer; earlier in winter.
• Food Valley or a Gomti Nagar restaurant for dinner. Metro does not drop you at these gates. Autos and app cabs are the day.

Monsoon can close lawns and slick the river tiles. After heavy rain, swap this day for a Ganj indoor evening. The parks will still be there in November, which is the kindest month for this map.

Why it matters

Lucknow’s new city is not a lesser copy of Chowk. It is parks, a river wall, and families who never go to the Imambara on a Sunday. One green day east of the Gomti is how you see that Lucknow, without pretending the lawns are Nawabi gardens.
