Gomti Riverfront
When Lucknow says the riverfront, it means the civic promenade along the Gomti, the walking and cycling shelves between the channel and the embankment, especially the Gomti Nagar, Jiamau and Marine Drive stretches. Lights on the water, a breeze if you are lucky, families at dusk. It is not Kukrail, which is Forest land to the east. It is not Janeshwar Mishra Park, which is a huge inland LDA park. The river is the point, even when the river itself is not pretty.
History
Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav inaugurated the Gomti riverfront development on 16 November 2016, a project the Irrigation Department had taken through in about two years, cost reported at 1,500 crore rupees. Zee News, the same day, described diaphragm walls on both banks, land between the waterway and the bund laid out for cycling, jogging and walking, children’s play, toilets, drinking water and parking every 500 metres, a musical fountain, a yoga pocket, a wedding ground, and an amphitheatre. Hardinge Bridge, Gomti barrage, Lohia Bridge and Gandhi Bridge were given coloured lighting. Gaus Mohammad Stadium opened with the same programme. A water bus was promised. Treat old promises as history unless you see the boat.
LDA has kept adding pieces. The popular evening walk sits near Ambedkar Memorial Park and Lohia Park, along what people call Marine Drive, toward Pipraghat and Lohia Setu. In 2025 the authority spoke of a 500-metre jogging track at Morpankhi Lawn, more entries between Lohia Setu and the ADCP office, and a 380-metre upgrade toward Pipraghat with gym, yoga hut, gazebo and lighting. A 700-metre nature trail near Lakshman Mela Ground has been inspected. A 180-metre pedestrian bridge near the ADCP office was approved in early 2026, about 54 crore rupees, 18 months in the official clock. That bridge is not a thing you can walk yet. Tourist cruises have been announced, not demonstrated here as a daily ticket. The green corridor road along the banks is a separate traffic project, some stretches open, others still in work.
What to do
Walk. That is the use. Morning joggers take the tracks. Evening families take the lights. Sit on the steps if the stretch you picked has them. Children use the play pockets that are open. On the right bank LDA has listed, in Times of India copy about the future bridge, a cricket ground, event space, children’s play, amphitheatre, a floating restaurant and a water-sports zone. Whether each of those is running the evening you go is a local fact. Food Valley is the named food street on this riverfront, Asha Jyoti Lane between Samatamulak Chowk and Prateek Sthal, the old Chatori Gali rebuilt. Eat there, then walk. Do not look for a second Food Valley somewhere else.
The water can smell. Knocksense, in March 2026, photographed a well-kept park edge and a dirty river, hyacinth and all, with the sewage plant across from the barrage part of the local complaint. Beautification of the bank is not the same as a clean Gomti. You come for the walk and the city lights, not for a hill-station stream. Musical fountains appear in old tourism pages; believe them only if they are jetting when you stand there.
Visiting
There is no single official tariff we could treat as current on 28 August 2026. Some stretches feel like an open promenade. Some park pockets have had a small gate ticket on travel pages, often Rs 10, with clocks that disagree: 6 am to 10 pm on one listing, 11 am to 9 pm and Monday closed on another. Those pages also invent fountain hours. Pay only at a marked civic counter. If there is no barrier, there is no ticket. Confirm any closing time at the stretch you entered. Lighting makes dusk the popular hour. Foggy winter mornings are for walkers. Monsoon steps can be slick. The river after a heavy rain is not a swimming invitation.
Jiamau / Gomti Nagar / Marine Drive is what you tell the auto. Lekhraj Metro is a nearby station for some stretches, then an auto. Parking exists in pockets and fills on holidays. From Phoenix Palassio the river is a short hop. From the Ganj you cross the bridges. Do not expect the whole bank from IIM Road to Kisan Path to be one finished garden. 2026 still has work zones, the pedestrian bridge unbuilt, cruises unproven. Walk the bit that is open. Skip the bit with a barricade.
Nearby
Lohia Park and Ambedkar Memorial Park are the stone-and-lawn neighbours. Food Valley is the plate on this same bank. Phoenix Palassio is the mall. Kukrail is the forest picnic, another geography. Janeshwar Mishra Park is the inland mega-lawn. Nausena Shaurya Vatika is in CG City, near Ekana, not on this promenade.
