LDA to Demolish 101 Illegal Buildings in Lucknow Starting August 17
The Lucknow Development Authority has finalised plans to demolish 101 illegal buildings across the city, with the enforcement drive set to commence on August 17. This action follows the Supreme Court’s stringent directions issued in the wake of the Aliganj fire tragedy that claimed 15 lives in June 2026.
According to LDA Vice-Chairman Prathamesh Kumar, the authority has compiled a detailed list of structures that violate sanctioned building plans and land-use regulations. Of the 101 buildings identified, 51 are situated in Aliganj, where commercial activities were being conducted on plots designated for residential purposes. The remaining properties are distributed across other areas of Lucknow and include several multi-storey constructions.
The LDA has requested adequate security forces from the police department to ensure the smooth conduct of the demolition operations. Notices have already been issued to the owners of the identified properties. Buildings that are not protected by any stay order from a competent court will be subjected to sealing or demolition as per the relevant provisions of the law.
The crackdown has been accelerated following the June 22 fire at an illegal commercial complex in Aliganj’s Sector D. The Supreme Court has directed a thorough review of illegal constructions in the area and has appointed a team comprising the amicus curiae and experts from IIT Delhi to conduct an on-ground survey on August 24.
Officials emphasised that the primary objective of the drive is to eliminate safety hazards posed by unauthorised constructions and to enforce strict compliance with urban planning norms in the state capital. Property owners in the affected localities have been advised to cooperate fully with the authorities during the process.
