Heavy Overnight Rain Causes Widespread Waterlogging in Lucknow; IMD Issues Multi-Day Alert
Heavy overnight rainfall lashed Lucknow on the night of August 15-16, 2026, bringing much-needed relief from the prevailing humid conditions while simultaneously causing widespread waterlogging in several parts of the city.
According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Amausi meteorological centre recorded 48.4 mm of rainfall, while the central observatory registered 36.2 mm. Local measurements indicated even higher figures in some areas, with Aliganj recording approximately 100 mm and the Hanuman Setu vicinity receiving 80.6 mm. Streets in Gomti Nagar, Janakipuram, Aliganj, Hazratganj and other localities were submerged, with water entering homes and commercial establishments in low-lying spots, resulting in inconvenience to residents and damage to goods.
The IMD has issued yellow and orange alerts for heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across Lucknow and more than 28 districts of Uttar Pradesh, with the spell expected to continue through August 17 to 19. A drop of five to six degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures is anticipated due to the ongoing precipitation.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to ensure that compensation reaches those affected by the rain and resultant waterlogging within 24 hours. Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor movement during the rains and to stay away from waterlogged stretches and nullahs.
