  • Lucknow Zoo

Lucknow Zoo, officially Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Garden, sits in Banarasi Bagh near Hazratganj. It opened as the Prince of Wales Zoological Gardens in 1921, not under Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. Closed Mondays; check last entry at the gate.

  • Rumi Darwaza

This sixty-foot brick arch is a city gate on the Hussainabad road, inspired by Istanbul’s Sublime Porte. It is free to walk through, and it is not the entrance of either Imambara. Traffic still uses it every day.

  • Chota Imambara

West of the Turkish Gate, this smaller Hussainabad hall is still called the Palace of Lights for its chandeliers. Muhammad Ali Shah built it as his tomb and his mother’s. Satkhanda and Rumi Darwaza stand nearby, not inside the compound.

  • Bara Imambara

Hussainabad’s great mourning hall was raised in a famine so thousands could work with dignity. Walk the unsupported vault first, then climb the labyrinth above it. The sixty-foot Turkish Gate on the west road is a separate monument.
